"Information Society" and "knowledge worker" have become catchwords of our time, symbolizing the importance of information to our society, culture, and economy. Implicit in the idea of "knowledge worker" and "information society" is the individual's capacity to use information within a given context. This course is about information: how it is created, organized, disseminated, and used with an emphasis on the impact of technologies as well as surrounding economic, legal, and social issues.

Successful completion of this course fulfills the A.A. degree's information literacy competency requirement. Students seeking the Associate of Arts degree must complete Information Literacy & Research Skills (INFS 1000), English Composition 1 (ENGL 1110), and the Computer Literacy Competency, within their first 24 college level course credits. INFS 1000 is also offered as credit-by-examination. Consult the College Catalog for how to take INFS 1000 as credit-by-examination. Credit-by-examination is only recommended for students who already have advanced level research and library skills. The examination is very demanding. Credit-by-examination is limited to 30 students per semester.

This course was first taught in Winter 1996. Original development of this course was funded by a Higher Education Technology Initiative Grant with support from the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library. This course was created to assist college and university students in learning to gather information for research. Anyone is free to use these lessons for independent learning. Registered students will complete a series of assignments, quizzes and a research project. The lessons were written by Utah academic librarians, and Utah resources are emphasized. While resources and information access may vary, the research skills learned will be useful everywhere. Knowing how to use information resources will be helpful to you for the rest of your life.

El concepto de Arquitectura de la información no es nuevo en ninguno de los círculos bibliotecológicos y de sistemas de información, sin embargo su aplicación y consolidación como término de este campo de especialidad viene a tomar fuerza en la medida que las practicas bibliotecológicas han virado con las actuales circunstancias de la globalización y las nuevas tecnologías. Hoy por hoy, palabras como bibliotecas digitales, documentos electrónicos y fuentes de información referencial, primaria o secundaria, en bases de datos y bancos de datos no nos son totalmente extrañas y por el contrario con parte de nuestro insumo o producto de trabajo y de manera sincrónica los conceptos de dato, información y conocimiento han ampliado el panorama del reflexionar de la ciencias de la información a medida que la confrontación con los objetos del hacer requieren nuevas dinámicas de actuación. El curso esta encaminado a trasegar por el mundo de las nuevas tecnologías enmarcadas en las clásicas tareas del quehacer de la organización de la información y las condiciones que esto último implica, con el propósito tácito de identificar en los metadatos una nueva forma de abordar la estructuración de los contenidos y los continentes de la información y por tanto explicitar la tarea que a los responsables de la gestión de la información les compete al encontrase con una nueva dimensión del tratamiento documental de los contenidos.

Information Literacy: Generic information skills for first-year students

The Information Literacy Course in generic information skills for all incoming first-year undergraduates is arranged centrally as a part of the curriculum programme UTT0010 �€œOrganization of Studies�€. The training classes cover the basics, including how to select a topic and develop research questions, as well as how to select, search for, find, evaluate and cite information sources. The web-based training contains practical stepwise search construction guides and tests how to effectively search in the Estonian libraries catalogue ESTER and efficiently find journal articles in the full text database EBSCOhost Web. The student receives 0.5 credit points.
