Søk og Skriv is a set of online learning objects guiding the student through the information search and writing processes. Further, the student is encouraged to reflect on the ethical, critical and creative use of information and to engage in a variety of activities that help them in the process of writing a research paper or a thesis. Searching and using information are presented as processes that go hand in hand with the writing process in the students' wider process of constructing meaning. The learning object contents take into account the students' situation in their learning process. To illustrate the different phases of the writing and information searching processes, students are invited to follow character Oda, a distance education student, and her progress in writing a research paper. Each object includes activities which encourage the student to produce different text types (e.g. brainstorming and outline writing) in connection with their own thesis or research paper writing. Other activities encourage the student to reflect on the information searching process.

The national unit specification involves forty hours of learning (this can be achieved by working through the Information Handling Skills course material) and the following four outcomes: 1. Plan an information task. 2. Identify a range of information sources and use them to investigate a chosen information task. 3. Evaluate the selected information. 4. Review search results and suggest possible improvements. See URL for full details. To accompany the unit specification there is a national assessment (NAB) available which has two parts to it. The first part is the practical abilities assessment where the candidate has to successfully undertake the four unit outcomes and gather evidence for their portfolio. The information task can be chosen from a range of scenarios including an open option where the unit qualification could be used in conjunction with another qualification for example the investigative part of a subject national unit qualification (Modern Studies Intermediate 11 or Higher English). To help the candidate record some of their evidence including their thinking and actions there are four log books, one for each outcome. The second part consists of thirty multiple choice questions which tests their knowledge and understanding.

Scenarios/themes - interactive learning based around finding information about: Employment; Leisure; Research; Shopping and Travel.
