El creixement i la importància de la informació és avui dia indiscutible. Qualsevol persona, entitat o empresa necessita accedir a molts tipus d'informació ja sigui per motius d'estudi, recerca, oci o recerca. L'increment de les fonts d'informació disponible -especialment en format electrònic- obliga l'usuari d'informació a desenvolupar un seguit de capacitats informacionals que el permetin buscar, localitzar i processar la informació. Cada cop més la societat demana que els seus individus siguin usuaris experts en l'ús d'informació. Les biblioteques, arxius, centres de documentació i altres centres d'informació similars han vingut formant des de sempre als seus usuaris en l'ús dels seus propis centres i en la informació que elles tenien (sessions de formació, visites guiades, ús del catàleg, etc.). El desenvolupament d'Internet, la sobreinformació i la necessitat cada cop més imperiosa de disposar d'informació vàlida en un entorn hiperinformat planteja als centres d'informació la necessitat de formar també els seus usuaris i usuàries en l'ús en general de la informació. Quina informació necessito? On la puc trobar? Quina haig de seleccionar? Com l'he d'utilitzar? El Grup de Treball d'alfabetització informacional (AI) promou els estudis i activitats necessaris per desenvolupar materials de suport a la tasca formadora dels centres d'informació.
The IVIG group members have formulated definition of information literacy and standards of an information literate university student as the base for the pilot survey of student's information literacy level at several universities/faculties in the Czech Republic in 2004-2005.
